Oyster Plate Varieties 2/97

It was started in February, 1997.

 

The face of Neptune (we think) surrounded by sirens and mermaids make this one of the most unusual in the collection. This five well plate is 9 inches (23cm) in diameter. Click on plate for enlargement and detail.

 

We call this fan shaped design a snail plate. the back mark logo is Wilhelm & Graee of New York although we are not certain of the spelling on the last name. Paintings of catfish, crab, flatfish, turtle and carp are in each of the five wells. The plate is 9.75 inches (24.5 cm) across. Click to enlarge.

 

A beautiful delicate French five well plate by Tressemanes &Voit. We have called this the star center design. This rather small plate is 8.25 inches (21 cm) in diameter. Click to enlarge and view backmark.

This Limoges oyster plate by Theodore Haviland does not have the classic wells but rather the oysters remain spaced by the decoration. The diameter is 8.75 inches (22 cm). Click to view plate, detail and backmark.

A deep square oyster dish with an assortment of mollusks: five oysters, two mussels and a clam. The plate is 7.6 inches (19.5 cm) from side to side. The backmark is B S M (we think). Click on image to get a better view.

Oyster Plates added in late April 1997

Many oyster plates were shaped into forms related to their use. This oyster shaped four well plate is such an example. The greatest width, from umbo to beak, is 8.75 in (22 cm)

This six well majolica plate by Minton is rather classic as it often is used to symbolize other oyster plates.The back mark would indicate it was made around 1876. The plate diameter is 9 inches (23 cm).

Ten well oyster server by Longchamp with two center sections for placement of whatever might go with the oysters. Wells are cockle shaped. Diameter of plate is 13.25 inches (33 cm).

Five well French Plate with pronounced floral design on white background. This plate has several unique features such as ball shaped feet. It was constructed of what we term soft paste. The backmark can seen on the detail page by clicking on the above image. Plate diameter is 9 inches (23 cm).
